Private Support

In recent years, private gifts have become increasingly important as the balance between public and private funding of the University's operations has shifted. Private gifts and income from the endowment now provide a larger proportion of the University's operating budget than state tax revenues appropriated by the Virginia General Assembly. In 2012–13 fiscal year, the University's Academic Division, which excludes the Medical Center and the University's College at Wise, expected to receive 19.4 percent of its operating budget, or $267.2 million, from gifts and endowment support, but only 10.2 percent, or $139.5 million, from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
